The Vision of Downers Grove Community Church
is to build up a community of faith where the teaching
and ministry of Jesus Christ is carried out to the world.
To this end we commit ourselves to...
Worship
- by gathering each week to profess that we are sinners
who have been redeemed by the cross of Christ
- by offering praise, thanksgiving, and intercession to
God
- by celebrating in ways that are meaningful, satisfying,
and relevant to the people of our time and culture
- by emphasizing biblical preaching that leads to
practical applications in our daily lives
- by joyously observing the sacraments of Baptism and the
Lord's Supper
- by encouraging all God's people - adults, young persons,
and children - to use their gifts in the worship of God
|
Discipleship
- by submitting ourselves to the authority of the
scripture as the only rule for faith and life
- by recognizing that each of us are at different stages
on the lifelong journey of the Christian faith
- by offering educational opportunities for people of all
ages to increase their knowledge and understanding of the
Bible, the church's teachings and the Christian life.
- by encouraging every member to actively participate in
at least one small group experience through which prayer,
Bible study and mutual support might deepen
|
Nurture and
Fellowship
- by giving special care and attention to strangers among
us
- by promoting an atmosphere in which members value, need,
honor and care for one another
- by accepting our various backgrounds and life
experiences as God's gift of diversity amid the unity of
faith
- by understanding that the primary role of elders and
deacons is that of congregational care
|
Missions
- by challenging each member to make a sacrifice of time,
talent, and treasure for the work of Christ's church
- by making our facilities available to groups and
organizations that seek to alleviate human need
- by supporting, promoting, and initiating specific
community ministries to those beyond our church doors
- by supporting mission efforts both in our country and
abroad
|
Evangelism
- by understanding that the task of witnessing is not the
sole responsibility of the pastors and consistory, but all
believers
- by challenging each person we meet to a personal
faith-commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
- by challenging each member to live a life that is
Christ-like rather than worldly minded
- by seeing the work of the Holy Spirit who enables us to
cross the physical, racial, and cultural barriers that
separate and divide us
